VIC: Youth unemployment "realistically" 5.4 per cent Reith

Federal Employment Minister PETER REITH says youth unemployment is at its lowest level in
10 years -- as a percentage of total Australian population.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show the unemployed youth seasonally adjusted
figure was 24.1 per cent in January.

But Mr REITH says the figure of 71,000 registered unemployed youth can be viewed in a
different way -- as a percentage of the total population.

And he says that's down to 5.4 per cent, which is the lowest since 1989.

He also says that the 24.1 per cent January figure is 5.8 per cent lower than the
seasonally adjusted figure last July.
