Fed: Aussies allowed to have dual citizenship = 2

Mr RUDDOCK says the government will move to repeal section 17 of the Australian Citizenship
Act 1948 so that in future, Australians will no longer lose their original citizenship
if they acquire another.

Mr RUDDOCK says submissions to a government discussion paper on the question strongly
supported the government's preliminary decision in May this year to repeal the section
of the Act.

He says this change will allow the growing numbers of internationally mobile Australians
to take advantage of opportunities overseas, while maintaining their links with Australia
and bringing back to the Australian community their valuable expertise and knowledge.

The move will also bring Australia into line with the citizenship laws of many comparable
countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the US, France and Italy.
