NSW: Australian soldier dies in East Timor=2

UN deputy spokesman MANOEL DE ALMEIDA E SILVA earlier told AP the incident took place
near the southeastern town of Maliana.

The soldier hasn't been identified.

The defence spokesman says no further comment will be made until the department issues
a statement later today.

Australian-led international troops landed in East Timor last September to restore
peace and security after its residents voted overwhelmingly for independence from Indonesia
in a UN-sponsored referendum.
