High speed Internet connectivity for all Bangladesh universitiessoon
DHAKA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- All universities and researchinstitutions in Bangladesh will be connected with high speedInternet under a World Bank sponsored project, the Washington- basedlender said Monday.
The World Bank is providing 81 million U.S. dollars for the "Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project" which aims at bringingforth both innovation and accountability within universities andenhancing the technical and institutional capacity of the highereducation sector, it said in a statement dispatched to Xinhua onMonday.
The bank said the project seeks to establish conditions that willstimulate teaching, improve learning, and boost research inuniversities, and introduce an efficient instrument for theallocation of public funds to universities.
The University Grants Commission (UGC), the statutory apex bodyin the field of higher education in Bangladesh, has already signedan agreement to establish the Bangladesh Research and EducationNetwork (BdREN) with the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), itadded.
According to the statement, BdREN will enable high performanceconnectivity among academics, scientists and researchers in highereducation to communicate with their peers within the country andeventually with the global academic and research community
With the Network Operation Center (NOC) set up at UGC, the firstphase of BdREN implementation has already begun.
BdREN will aid the teachers and students of Bangladesh inaccessing the latest developments in the realms of knowledgeglobally, particularly through a widely covered digital librarywhich will also be supported by this project, said the statement.
