FED: McGauran labels Greepeace action a meaningless stunt

Federal Science Minister PETER MCGAURAN has labelled Greenpeace's storming of the Lucas
Heights nuclear reactor as a meaningless stunt.

Mr MCGAURAN says the demonstrators are part of the radical fringe, and have proved
nothing except their own misunderstanding of the purpose of the Sydney facility.

The minister says the reactor produces nuclear medicine which save lives, and security
at the facility is up to international standards.

He says no demonstrators gained entry to any building which housed nuclear material,
but the government will be investigating the incident, and the need to boost security.

Police say 46 people have been arrested and will be charged with trespass.

They'll face Sutherland Local Court later today.
