Mr Bredhauer, 45, said he was uncertain what he would do in life after politics.
"I obviously believe I'm young enough and talented enough to have another career,"
he told reporters today.
"T just think after 14 years in politics I've given it a fair shake," Mr Bredhauertold reporters.
"But I'd be less than honest if I didn't say that the demands of being the Member forCook and Minister for Transport and Main Roads haven't taken their toll."
Premier Peter Beattie said he was "stunned" when Mr Bredhauer told him of his intentionstwo days ago.
"Steve has been one of my closest supporters," Mr Beattie said.
"It is a loss but he has always taken the view he was a team player," Mr Beattie said.
Meanwhile, Mr Beattie said Ms Edmonds' retirement was an opportunity for renewal ingovernment if Labor was re-elected at a poll due by May next year.
